Russian: from the Late Latin woman's personal name Aquilīna, a derivative of Aquila ‘eagle’, which had been used as a family name in the classical period. St Aquilina is revered in the Orthodox Church as a young virgin martyr beheaded in Syria at the end of the third century.
Variant: Akulina (a vernacular form).
